Prince Caspian (pt. 1) and Really Living

We went to watch The Chronicles of Narnia, Prince Caspian a few days ago. I liked this movie better than The Lion The Witch and the Wardrobe (though in the books it is the other way around). These stories by C.S. Lewis create deep spiritual impact on me. The major things felt after watching the movie were: (1) the need to look to God, to seek God, to wait for God and not to act on one’s own power or motivation, and (2) that I want to be like Lucy more than any other character.

I’ve begun to reread the book and will make some comments on it as the days go by. Look at how awesome this quote is, “To sleep under the stars, to drink nothing but well water and to live chiefly on nuts and wild fruit, was a strange experience for Caspian after his bed with silken sheets in a tapestried chamber at the castle, with meals laid out on gold and silver dishes in the anteroom, and attendants ready at his call. But he had never enjoyed himself more. Never has sleep been more refreshing nor food tasted more savoury, and he began already to harden and his face wore a kinglier look.”

One of the things Lewis liked (and liked to point out in his writings) was to enjoy the simplest things in life. I have heard of people who don’t like to go camping because it is a lower standard of living. Then I read this from Prince Caspian! The lower standard is actually a higher one. Without all the pomp that money brings, food is more savory, sleep is more refreshing, and life more enjoyable. I wonder how much we would benefit if we began to live like Caspian did in the forrest with Old Narnia? If we would slow down, notice the animals and the trees? If we gave up eating on silver plates and sleeping on silken sheets? What is it in my life, in your life, that is getting of the way of really living? How many false glories crowd out real life?
